Is it bad to always take antibiotics?

Hi Doc,
Is it bad to always take antibiotics? This year I have taken 3 courses of Augmentin. Ever since I did my radiotherapy 4 years ago on my nose, I seem to catch bacteria flu quite easily. It will start with lots and lots of greenish mucus coming out from my nostril and then I will get a very cough soon enough. It is the same every time.I always needed Augmentin to recover fully. But after 3 months or so I will get the same thing over again . . I am worried that Augmentin will not be able to work one day as the bacteria may become more resistant. I am currently down with the same thing but have not gone to see a doctor yet.. I am 100% positive that it is another bacteria attack, Should I go for another course of Augmentin? I have taken so many courses and I am getting worried. I am thinking of doing a yearly flu jab once I recover. Will the flu jab protects me from further attacks

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

First thing that I would like to tell you is that Flu is viral Infection and not bacterial..
So taking antibiotics if there is a viral infection is of no use as antibiotics can treatment outcome bacterial infections and not viral..
So first of all get a sputum culture, blood test and chest x ray done to confirm what is the nature of infection..
If it is viral then you need not to take antibiotics..
Yes, taking antibiotics very frequently can cause resistance..
But you does not seem to be so frequent..

Hope this helps..

Regards.

Hi.
For now you can take decongestants like Phenylephrine, mucolytic like Bromohexine and antihistamines like Levocetrizine..
Take cough expectorant containing Gueifenesin..
Do warm saline gargles..
Do steam inhalation and use a humidifier in your room..
Avoid spicy and chilled foods..
Drink warm water..

Hope this helps..
