7 Questions to Ask Your Doctor About Prostate Cancer

pictures-of-prostate-cancer

1. Do I really have cancer?

The PSA test is “not a perfect blood test, but it is the best method for finding men who might have prostate cancer.

2. What is the grade of my cancer?

Tumor grades come in low, medium and high, in order of aggressiveness. In prostate cancer, the Gleason score measures the grade on a scale of six to 10.

3. How much cancer do I have?

During a typical biopsy, the doctor takes 12 to 14 cell samples. How many of those samples showed prostate cancer, and how much is important. If the samples contain many cancer cells, you might get further tests – an MRI and bone scan – to determine whether the cancer has spread beyond the prostate.

4. Are cancer stage and grade related?

The two tend to correlate. More aggressive cancers usually are associated with higher-grade cancers. Conversely, the less aggressive the cancer, the lower the stage is likely to be.

5. Does my cancer need to be treated?

You can choose to follow an active surveillance of the cancer : If you have low-grade, low-stage cancer, you may elect to do nothing.

6. What are my treatment options?

There are a number of treatment options such as radiation or surgery. Surgery falls into two categories as well: open or minimally invasive, which includes laparoscopic and robotic. Check your options.

7. What are the side effects of my treatments?

There’s no treatment option that doesn’t have potential for side effects.

Question
Hi, I’m XXXX. I’m 26 years old. I was 10 weeks pregnant when i had D&C on 11th June. I was too depressed and haven’t had sex since. but we had unprotected sex a night before d&c. I didn’t bleed much that day. only a day or two after d&c. later all pregnancy symptoms went away. I started to bleed on 7th July. But that was not like periods. my periods are never regular. 15 days cycle or 2 months gap. there was not much flow this time. only little and fresh reddish pink for some time a day. it continues for 3 4 days. 1 st it was just spotting. was that implantation bleeding again? am I pregnant again? Can I be pregnant again? I see all pregnancy symptoms came back. I feel nauseous, light headed and shooting pain in lower abdomen. there was weird test in my mouth. Can I be pregnant? please say yes. is that possible?
Answer
It is possible to become pregnant after D&C. After a D and C, you may experience mild cramping and staining. Light cramping and bleeding can be expected from a few days to up to 2 weeks. Ibuprofen is usually suggested for treating cramps. You should not insert anything into the vaginal area (including using a douche or having sexual intercourse) for at least 2 weeks or until the bleeding stops. Consult with your doctors if you should experience:
Dizziness or fainting
Prolonged bleeding (over 2 weeks)
Prolonged cramping (over 2 weeks)
Bleeding heavier than a menstrual period, or filling more than one pad per hour
Severe or increased pain
Fever over 100.4 °F

While QuestionDoctors is an honest attempt to provide access to the best possible medical information to the patient, the Medical Experts will not be examining you physically. The Medical Expert may not have access to all or some of your medical history that might be critical to consult you. The Medical Expert will not have the benefit of information that would be obtained by examining you in person, observing your physical condition and by going through your medical records. This means that the service provided through QuestionDoctors is different from the diagnostic and treatment services typically decided by a physician. Therefore, the physician may not be aware of facts or information that would affect his or her opinion of your diagnosis. To reduce the risk of this limitation, QuestionDoctors strongly encourages you to be in touch with an on-ground physician and share the QuestionDoctors opinion with him/her. By deciding to engage this service, you acknowledge and agree that you are aware of this limitation and agree to assume the entire risk of this limitation;
By requesting a medical opinion through QuestionDoctors, you acknowledge and agree that:
• The advice/information/opinion on diagnosis you may receive could be limited and provisional;
• The medical opinion is not intended to replace a face-to-face visit with a physician just yet and it replace an actual Doctor-patient relationship;
• In case of a second opinion where there is a difference of opinion among our Medical Experts and your physician, you would bear the responsibility to decide the next step. We hope to help you in making the right decision but at the end it is only up to you to share our consultants’ opinion with your physician or to go for another physical exam (if needed) or to reach-out to QuestionDoctors Health Consultant for offline consultation, or procedure, and/or treatment;
• The physician is reliant on information provided by you and hence any information demonstrated to have been falsified will immediately render the opinion and all details therein null and void;
In some cases, the consultant may determine that the transmitted information is of inadequate quality and may ask for more information, without which he/she may refuse to answer the query;
In rare cases, the consultant may feel that the query may not be answerable without physically examining the patient and the consult may be refused forthwith;
In very rare instances, security protocols could fail, causing a breach of privacy of personal medical information;
Delays in medical evaluation and answers could occur due to deficiencies or failures of the service as per those mentioned in Terms of Use.

I suddenly developed a coarse tremor down my right side. I was unable to walk without help and my speech was very slurred…

Question:
21/2 years ago I suddenly developed a coarse tremor down my right side. I was unable to walk without help and
my speech was very slurred. I was taken to a&e because my Gp wasn’t happy with my eyes. I was in hospital 5 days. I received an MRI scan and also a CT scan but nothing showed up. I was sent home to await an apt from a neurologist. It took me 9 weeks for it to settle back down. I attended my Neuro apt and had a radio active dye scan and again all was ok. Since then I still get a tremor down my right side but I worked out if I marched on the spot or swayed from side to side it was more manageable. It seems to come in attacks that are recurrent. In the last year things have been really bad. Each time an attack comes another symptom appears. It builds up in the same pattern. I get a very unbalanced head to start with then it feels very heavy, my ears become so sensitive to vibrations that I put cotton wool in them so it’s not so painful. I get a sensation of looking under water and also a kind of static in my eyes. My head gets so heavy wen I try to lift it it bobs up and down. The pain and pressure I feel at the base of my skull and neck also it’s extremely painful. Lifting my head up is very hard work. My speech then slurs n I become unbalanced when moving around. My body pulls to the left side slightly but if I don’t concentrate on moving my feet I end up walking against walls. I feel drunk. My right arm and leg drag. I get so tired I can’t move which makes it difficult to concentrate. It’s as if my head fills with pressure and fog. Under my ribs the tremor is at its worst. I feel as though I am being squeezed and struggle to catch my breath. In the last 4 months I think I may have been experiencing seizures. I get a funny humming noise in my head and ears but I also hear noises at the same time what I think are seizures happening. I have no warning of collapsing. I do hear everything that’s happening though. As if am dreaming. My partner says my eyes drift off before hand n when I hit the floor my back is arching and I shake uncontrollably for a few minutes then it’s a calm feeling I get. It has happened during sexual intercourse quite a few times now. Certain lights like the flickering tube lights make my eyes and head feel funny and I shake when exposed to it but the same is now happening with patterns on walls or if I look at blinds on a window. I am very forgetful and finding it difficult to understand simple things. My neurologist has now referred me to see a movement disorder specialist because my tests 2 years ago didn’t show anything up.  I’m not sure if this has any relevance but a few months prior to all this starting I had a drunk feeling. I was admitted to hospital and had a lumbar puncture done. It showed an increase in protein but was sent home 2 days later with viral meningitis as a diagnosis. I’m sorry it’s so much to read but any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Answer

Tremors, shaking and seizure-like events can be caused by a variety of conditions : Parkinson’s Disease, Essential Tremor Condition, Multiple Sclerosis, Alcoholism and/or Drug Abuse, Huntington’s Disease etc. Consulting with a neurologist is the right thing to do. Your medical specialists should continue testing you for different conditions until they have discovered the problem. If nothing is found you should try experimenting with lifestyle changes and alternative approaches.

Get a Second Opinion From A Doctor

Click Here to obtain a Second Opinion

How will my Doctor react if I get a Second Medical Opinion?

Most doctors will welcome another physician’s input. Your doctor may be able to recommend a specialist. A good doctor understands your right to be well informed and should support a second opinion. You will want to obtain a copy of your medical records and test results, to share with the new doctor that you see for the second opinion.

Medical Opinions from Doctors may differ.

A different doctor may come up with a different diagnosis, or at least offer a different opinion as to treatment choices. Not every doctor will have the same opinion with regard to diseases and possible treatments. Factors which may have an effect on a doctor’s opinion are technology available to that doctor, school of thought : Conventional, Integrative, Alternative, Naturopathic, where they were trained, individual methods of treatment and experience in dealing with that particular diagnosis.

Treatments may differ and Provide You with Options.

Some doctors prefer to monitor the situation and use less aggressive procedures before moving to surgical intervention. Some doctors like to use more aggressive treatment methods from the beginning. By getting a second opinion, you can expand your options about different treatment methods which may be most suitable for you and your situation. Being informed is always your best option!

Second Opinions are to your Advantage and in fact may be Lifesaving.

It never hurts to get a second opinion. Keep in mind that doctors are human and they too can make mistakes or be faced with unusual or challenging cases. When the first doctor’s opinion is the same or similar to the second doctor’s, your confidence will be increased. There is nothing lost by visiting one more doctor just to make sure that the first doctor’s opinion is correct. With serious illnesses that may require extended treatment, you should feel confident that you have chosen the most appropriate treatment for your particular situation. A valid opinion and appropriate course of treatment is your best option for return to good health or grasping control of the chronic disease.

While second opinions may be awkward for doctor and patient at times, studies have shown that 30 percent of patients, who sought second opinions for elective surgery and 18 percent of those who were required to obtain a second opinion by their insurance company, found that the two opinions were not in agreement. These studies are one more reason why you need to make sure you are educated properly to make the best decision for your health.

Choosing a Physician: Conventional, Integrative, Alternative, Naturopathic.

There are many professional doctors in practice today. Family physicians provide comprehensive medical care with an emphasis on caring for all members of the family. A general surgeon is able to perform all types of surgical procedures aimed at treating a range of diseases and conditions, including cancer. Medical oncologists are specialists that use various medications to treat and manage patients with cancer. This may include the use of chemotherapy to kill cancer cells, painkillers to manage cancer pain, and drugs that will eliminate or reduce the side effects of cancer treatment. Radiation oncologists use therapeutic applications of radiation to manage cancer and other diseases. They determine the type of radiation that will be used, as well as the amount or dose, and the number and length of treatments.

You may have a need for all four of these types of physicians at one time. It is beneficial to you to keep files or a journal with names and dates and copies of your medical records and procedures as your journey to wellness can be confusing and the doctors will need to know exactly what care you have previously received.

There are also a number of different approaches to medicine itself : Eastern Medicine is completely different than

A Second Medical Opinion is Your Right….go ahead Question Doctors!

Second opinions are a way to learn about your diagnosis and choices for treatment options. Some doctors are more conservative while others tend to be more aggressive. A patient has rights and one of your most important rights is the ability to get a second opinion about your diagnosis. Being informed is critical in deciding your choice of treatment.

Statistics show that over one third of adults in the United States will never seek a second opinion and almost one tenth of newly diagnosed patients rarely, or never understand their diagnosis. A second opinion means you are consulting with another doctor to confirm a diagnosis and/or find possible different treatment choices available to you. It is recommended to get a second opinion immediately to avoid delays in your treatment and recovery. Seven states currently have health laws pertaining to second opinions.

Thighs feel burning while walking short distances

Question:
Thighs feel burning walking short distances, very uncomfortable – had lower back cat scan not heard back yet been over1 1/2 years. Had circulatory test done on legs was ok, Had heart problem 2 years ago on various med for that what should I do next

Answer:

The inability to walk as far and as long as you’d like to can be frustrating and even depressing. It may also be a sign your body is giving you to alert you of a health problem. Two causes of leg weakness after walking a short distance may be spinal stenosis or peripheral artery disease, especially as you age.

If you can walk only a short distance before experiencing leg weakness, you could have spinal stenosis. This is a condition in which the opening that your spine passes through is narrowing, which causes compression on the nerve. If the portion of the spine that provides stimulation to your legs is affected, you may experience weakness, tingling or discomfort in your legs, particularly as you walk.You and your doctor can decide the best course of treatment for your spinal stenosis, if you are diagnosed. Physical therapy is a healthy and safe option.

Peripheral artery disease may make it difficult for you to walk long distances. This condition occurs when the blood vessels that supply your leg muscles with blood and oxygen become narrowed. This makes it difficult to give your working muscles the nutrients they need, especially when you are using them, which can lead to pain and weakness of the muscle. Arteriosclerosis, or plaque buildup, causes the narrowing of your artery.

Physical activity may be enough to improve your symptoms. Your body may be able to adapt by finding a way to supply your muscles with blood by routing blood flow around the occlusion. Regular activity involving working to volitional fatigue, then resting until you are ready to work again, can help improve your circulation. If your condition is beyond physical therapy, your doctor may recommend a more invasive course of action, such as surgery.

If you are generally a sedentary person, your leg weakness may just be from deconditioned muscles. Regular exercise, such as 30 minutes of moderate exercise five days per week as recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Heart Association, can keep your body and muscles fit, strong and working well. However, before you start exercising, always gain medical clearance from your physician.

You definitely need to obtain a scan to determine the nature of the problem as well as consult with a cardiologist to establish if your heart condition worsened. An exercise program prepared by a qualified instructor or therapist is a good way to go. Again, it is preferable to get the OK from your MD before starting an exercise program.

I feel some pain on my testicles and lower abdomen

Question:
I am 20 years old before 2 weeks I drink and smoke around 20 cigarettes after I masturbates also after few days I feel some pain on my testicles and lower abdomen also I don’t know what is this.can u pls tell me.

Answer:
The testicles and lower abdominal region contain specialized tissues that aid in male hormone regulation and sperm production, as well as musculature and connective tissue that make up the abdominal wall. Abdominal and testicular pain can manifest as sharp stabbing pains, radiating soreness or throbbing aches. These symptoms are caused by a number of underlying conditions.Inguinal hernia often causes pain in the lower abdomen and groin. This condition develops from a weakening of the abdominal wall in the groin region.Testicular torsion — the twisting of a cord-like structure within the scrotum — can also cause testicular or lower abdominal pain. Twisting of this cord cuts off the blood supply to the testicle and other structures within the scrotum. The result is intense pain in one testicle that develops without warning. You should obtain a scan to identify the source of the problem.
