I had a CAT Scan (CT) will radiation increase my cancer risk?

Hi I asked a question a month ago about some auxillary swollen lymph nodes. I ended up getting a ct of my chest and it came back clear. I’m a little worried now over the radiation. At the time, I thought the benefits outweighed the bad but after learning more, I feel like we should have just done a needle biopsy which my doctor didn’t offer to do. I’m 28/f 5’1 100 pounds. I’ve never had any medical imaging tests until this year. In November I had a car accident and the ER doctor talked me into having a brain ct scan which I had asked him if it was a lot of radiation and he said no and was very persistent on getting it. I feel that it was unnecessary because I only had some bruises and my head was fine. I also had some x rays done. Then my chiropractor did his own set of x rays. This month for the swollen lymph nodes, I had another chest x ray done and the chest ct scan with and without contrast (so I have no idea how many pictures that is.) I really regret doing these cts especially since they are all in a short time frame– 9 months apart… If I never have another x ray or ct again… will the damage I have done increase my cancer risk?

hi dear
the exposures you had untill now, taken all together , are very very less to cause u a cancer or any adverse side effects.
the reported cancer cases are in the people who get daily exposures to such harmful radiations, that too in high doses.
even if u would need any such investigations in future,do not hesitate to get it it done. of course its better to avoid it as far as possible . but such investigation exposures wont cause u any side effects unless you have very low immunity.
thanks

hello there
you are absolutely right. such exposures do carry high risk of developing cancers but a lot depends on your genotype as well. a strong family history of anyone having a cancer puts you at high risk of developing that particular cancer. do avoid further exposures. the old ones dont seem to be of concern at present. do not worry

Normally radiations is not got for humans as they have many negative effects over the human body. But if done unnecessarily and with no symptoms behind..doing neccesary xray or ct scans is going to reveal something that if left undiagnosed could be more dangerous than increasing the risk of cancer..so if you think your symptoms are not something to worry about do not expose yourself to radiations..

HI
IF U DONT GET ANOTHER CAT SCAN OR XRAY DONE EVER AGAIN THEN I DONT THINK YOU WILL GET ANY CANCER IN FUTURE AS THE AMOUNT OF RADIATION YOU HAD TILL NOW IS VERY MUCH NEGLIGIBLE AS FAR AS CARCINOGENIC POTENTIAL IS CONCERNED.
