I am a 48 yr old woman and have been gradually feeling numbness AT first in my right hand then numbness and severe pain! It only occurred when I woke in the morning. Now, it is both hands. Total numbness. Starts at 4 am.I awake in excruciating pain and burning . The pain in my hands feels like their being squeezed in some sort of vice and nails pounded through at same time .Radiates up left arm. Im afraid to sleep to wake to this agony

You should be evaluates by a neurologist for the possibility of cervical disc lesion or arthritis, this could be radiated from your neck.
First of all you have to readjust your pillow as it might be either too high or too low ..also the hardness of the pillow matters it should be of medium capacity fiber material ..

It can be due to causes like pinched nerve or some neurological problems..
You should consult a Neurologist and get evaluated and investigations like MRI SCAN, serum vitamin B 12 and complete blood picture can be done as initial investigation .

My opinion you may have carpal tunnel syndrome , to make sure you need to do a nerve conduction velocity to make sure it is not a cervical problem , physical therapy can help
