Hi , I am a 31 yr old other wise healthy male of Asian descent . Was diagnosed with mononucleosis 7 months ago . Since then I have not been able to recover and have not been able to work . There has only been about a 30% reduction in symptoms from the initial stage . I do not test positive for mono any more but symptoms still exist . Main symptoms are extreme fatigue discomfort in the side of the abdomen (flank area ) and depression . Symptoms seem to relapse upon the slightest exertion or exercise. Have seen several doctors with no specific treatment or medication just rest . Could EBV virus recovery take so long or could this have progressed to any thing else ? Please advise . Losing hope here .

Hi.
This is probably not mononucleosis as it does not last 7 month, so I recommend exploring other possibility like appendicitis
Good Luck
Hi..
Thanks for the query..
Well, the symptoms of EBV commonly subside in 2-3 weeks but fatigue can last for 2-3 months and in very few cases can even last for about one year..
So the symptoms can be lingering from EBV infection only..
But I would also suggest you to get a blood culture done to rule out for any other infections..
A CBP +ESR should also be done..
Discomfort in flank area can be related to some renal problem or infection..
A urine culture and ultrasound has to be done in this regard.
For depression consult a Psychologist and get evaluated and also do meditation and yoga..
Take a nutritious diet, drink plenty of water and sufficient rest..
Wish you a soon recovery..
Chronic fatigue syndrome is a common complication to Ebv infection, I recommend you to seek psychological advice
Obviously it is not EBV recovery not mono..
It is mostly kidney related ..
