We have this patient who’s veins on upper and lower extremities are no longer accessible due to multiple peripheral insertion?

Hi a registered nurse here from the Philippines. I just want a clarification regarding intravenous access on the abdominal wall vein. We have this patient who’s veins on upper and lower extremities are no longer accessible due to multiple peripheral insertion. The patient needed intravenous access for her IV meds. Abdominal wall vein was used as an access. Is it allowed for a nurse to access an intravenous site on the abdominal wall vein? What are the complications of abdominal intravenous access? Thank you. Your response is highly appreciated.

Hi
No study shows any complications regarding abdominal intravenous access , only precautions should be taken not to insert it above the course of a VP shunt or near a nipple if it’s inserted in chest wall
Good Luck

Why don’t you use the veins in skull or central vein in the neck ????

It’s gonna be way way better

It’s complications is gonna be like other iv access, infection, inflammation… Etc

But abdominal infection is a lol bit dangerous , so make it in some where you are well trained to access

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

Well if done with expertise abdominal intravenous insertion can work well..
However infection can be a complication but not always..

Hope this helps..

Hi..
Expert nurses can do the procedure but you should do it out if you have been trained for it and you are confident enough to do it but always do under supervision of a physician or surgeon..

Hope this helps..

The complications are the same for any accessed vein in the body, however it is preferred to go central vein.
It differs from country to country about the legality of nurses to do this according to the level of training and education ,so you need to check with the authorities in tour country for the legal issues..
