Hi Dr, age 57, recently my Dr did a blood glucose test on me in our general hospital, FPG result 5.7 and 2 hrs later OGTT result 3.7. Well he claim that I vomited, which was not the case neither did drink any water during the 2 hrs. Then send me for second test, 2 weeks later, again FPG 5.6 and OGTT 3.2. He is puzzled and cannot give any answer , just brushing off the question by saying at least we know you are not diabetic. My question is, why my glucose level drop so much after consuming the glucose? And am I diabetic? Thank you.
Hi and welcome to question doctors.com This case is Reactive hypoglycemia which is the general term for having a hypo after eating, which is when blood glucose levels become dangerously low following a meal. the result of too much insulin being produced and released by the pancreas following a large carbohydrate-based meal. One possible explanation is that in rare cases, a benign (non-cancerous) tumour in the pancreas may cause an overproduction of insulin, or too much glucose may be used up by the tumour itself. i do not think you are diabetic. these changes may be occuring due to hormonal changes. you need to get detailed hormonal assay including insulin levels checked.
THERE MAY BE SOME PROBLEM IN YOUR HYPOTHALAMO-PITUITARY AXIS THAT MAY BE CAUSING THE DERANGEMENTS IN SUGAR LEVELS. PITUITARY ADENOMA NEEDS TO BE RULED OUT. CONSULT A ENDOCRINOLOGIST
pancreatitis can cause insulin derangements in blood . this can cause unexplained ups and downs in blood sugar levels. pancreatic amylase should be checked in blood. get a ct abdomen with contrast done
